German Currywurst

Before we delve into the German currywurst recipe, here are some things to know about this ultimate comfort dish.

Why is Currywurst so Popular in Germany?

German currywurst is a simple street food dish that has remained popular in Germany for decades. Many people consider the success of the dish due to its simplicity, accessibility throughout the country, and low cost. Personally, having visited Berlin in winter, I would also attribute much of the popularity to the warming, comforting sensation it provides on a cold day!

What Does Currywurst Taste Like?

Currywurst has a unique flavour profile that blends many different elements. The sauce is tomato-based, which gives it a slightly sweet flavour. It is only with the addition of spices that give it the distinctive spicy, smokey taste is it famous for.

Is Currywurst Spicy?

If you are sampling currywurst throughout Berlin, the spice levels will vary. Typically, currywurst will feel simply ‘warming’ rather than the hot spice that we associate with Indian curries. It is this warming sensation that makes it the ideal comfort food, especially for cold German winters!

What is in Currywurst Sauce?

Currywurst recipes can vary dramatically, producing a wide variety of flavours. Typically, all recipes will use a tomato base of either tomato puree or ketchup. The sauce is then seasoned with curry powder, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper to give it the unique smokey, spicy taste. After that, you’ll find a unique combination of elements, so be sure to sample a few varieties of the dish when you next visit Germany!

What is Currywurst Served With?

Currywurst is commonly served with French fries. Like most comfort foods, a side of salty carbs is what is needed to go alongside it! Alternatively, some places may choose to serve currywurst with a bread bun on the side instead.

Creating the German Currywurst Recipe

With so many varieties of currywurst throughout Germany and no one ‘authentic’ recipe, currywurst is a dish that you can really experiment with if you enjoy being in the kitchen. This recipe is based on the variety we sampled in Berlin shopping centre Potsdamer Platz Arkaden.

Whatever variety you choose to create, the recipe should be quick and easy to create, so you can have fun trying out various kinds to create your favourite!
