Supplies to Make a Geode Painting

First, we need to talk about the supplies that you will need to make a geode painting. Let's start with the basic stuff.

1. Canvas- You will obviously need a painting surface such as a canvas.

2. Acrylic Paints- To mix with your pouring medium. I love the Amsterdam and Liquitex brands.

3. Pouring Medium- to mix with your acrylic paints to make your paints fluid. You can either use an artistic pouring medium like Liquitex or a pouring medium substitute like Floetrol.

4. Protective Finish- You will need a protective finish such as an acrylic varnish. I prefer to use a triple-thick spray varnish. It is easier to apply and still gives a good glossy look. If you really want a high gloss look, you can use the liquitex high gloss liquid varnish or add a coat of Tri-Art Liquid Glass to your finished geode piece.

5. Embellishments- After the painting is done, you can either just varnish it or embellish it if you want to add more bling!

You can use some sparkly glitter, silver or gold leaf, crystals, rocks, or use acrylic paint markers to add some nice effects. Here is a post I made to show you how to make diy crushed cystals.

Here's a video that shows the jaw-dropping sparkle of one of the glitters available at FairyTaleApothecary.com They are perfect for creating sparkly Geodes as well as Galaxies with lots of bling!!!

6. Metallic Paints or Pigments- You could even use some metallic acrylic paints or sparkly mica pigments to give your geode some extra shimmer.

Mix some of the Colourarte pigments with Tri-art Liquid Glass pouring medium and pour these luscious onto your canvas for Geodes with amazing colors!

Steps to Make a Geode Painting

Now that you know what supplies you need, let's talk about some general steps for making your geode painting. Then I will show you some video tutorials with techniques that you can choose from to make your own geode painting.

  1. Choose 3-5 colors for your geode. Good acrylic pouring color combinations will make your geode stand out.
  2. Mix your paints and pouring medium according to the instructions mentioned in the videos below. For geodes, I prefer my paint mixture consistency to have a 1-2 second mound so that the colors don't just all combine with each other.
  3. Choose the technique you want to use (see the videos down below) and then pour your colors onto your canvas like shown in the video.
  4. Tilt your canvas like shown in the videos down below until you get the desired design.
  5. Set your painting down and let it dry for 2-3 days.
  6. Varnish your painting.
  7. Embellish your painting if you wish to do so.If you are planning embellishing your painting with rocks, crushed glass, and foil flakes, then use your varnish to glue down your embellishments.
Here is a list of embellishments that I use for my geodes.
  8. You can also take your acrylic markers and draw some lines following the natural pattern of the geode painting. This is a great way to add some more details to your painting!

Techniques for Making Paint Pouring Geodes Without Resin

Now let's talk about the different techniques that you can use to make a geode painting without resin.

#1. Puddle Pour Technique

I've found that the puddle pour technique works great for geodes because it allows your geode painting to get those lines of separate colors that geodes have.

Here are 5 examples of diy geode paintings done with the puddle pour technique. You can do one big puddle or several smaller puddles like you will see in the following videos.

#2. Dirty Flip Cup Pouring Technique

You can also do geodes with the flip cup technique. The lines won't be as defined as with the puddle pour technique, however, you can use acrylic markers, crushed glass, and other things to create some lines.

Here is a video that shows how to make a beautiful geode with a dirty flip cup and some embellishments.

#3. Clean Straight Pour

You can also do geodes by doing a clean straight pour. You just pour the individual colors in lines one right after the other. See the next videos for more details.

Remember, you don't need to finish your piece with a coat of resin. You can just varnish it! Adding a coat of resin after the painting is done is completely optional!

#3. Dirty Pour

This next video shows you how to do a geode by putting all of your colors into a cup and then pouring them onto your canvas. It looks beautiful!
