Sofia is mother to the current reigning monarch King Felipe VI, one of three children she had with former monarch Juan Carlos along with Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina.
As news of his mother's health was revealed, King Felipe reportedly continued to carry out royal engagements including holding a military audience in Madrid at the Royal Palace.
Earlier today, Felipe was pictured arriving at the Ruber International Clinic to visit his mother and provide support as she continues her treatment.
Despite no longer being monarch, Sofia was still scheduled to be carrying out royal duties. She became Queen in 1975 after marrying Juan Carlos a few years earlier.
