☘️ St. Paddy's Day Fun Facts
Who was Saint Patrick?
St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was born in England during the 5th century and moved to Ireland as a teenager. He is credited for bringing Christianity to Ireland. The celebration of St. Patrick's Day occurs every March 17th, the date of his passing. Learn more here.
Why do we wear green on St. Patrick's Day?
Because . . . Leprechauns! According to Irish folklore, wearing green makes us invisible to leprechauns, which apparently like to pinch people!
The color is also connected to good luck and wearing green is often worn to honor Irish ancestry. See more here.
Did St. Patrick really banish snakes from Ireland?
According to this article: "Among the legends associated with St. Patrick is that he stood atop an Irish hillside and banished snakes from Ireland—prompting all serpents to slither away into the sea. In fact, research suggests snakes never occupied the Emerald Isle in the first place. There are no signs of snakes in the country’s fossil record. And water has surrounded Ireland since the last glacial period. Before that, the region was covered in ice and would have been too cold for the reptiles."
